Tidal Energy in the Severn Estuary: Challenges and Opportunities

Roger is Emeritus Professor of Water and Environmental Engineering and was Founding Director of the Hydro-environmental Research Centre (1997-14) at Cardiff University, Director of Roger Falconer Water Consultancy Ltd., Director of Dragon River & Tidal Ltd. and Technical Advisor for Natural Energy Wyre Ltd. He was previously Professor of Water Engineering (1987-97) and Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (1993-97) at the University of Bradford and Lecturer at the University of Birmingham (1977-87).

He has extensive experience of undertaking research on hydro-environmental modelling (including tidal renewable energy) and has published over 500 papers and technical reports in the field.  He is a Fellow of: the Royal Academy of Engineering, the European Academy of Sciences and the Learned Society of Wales, President (2011-15) and Honorary Member of the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (2011-15), Vice President of the International Association for Coastal Reservoir Research (2017-date). He was a member of: the Government’s Expert Panel for the Severn Tidal Power Feasibility Studies, Technical Consultant to Hafren Power, a member of the Expert Panel for the Mersey Barrage, and Consultant to ITP providing technical support to the Hendry Review of tidal lagoons (2016). He regularly consults on a range of tidal and river energy projects.
